Full sun, half shade, adaptable to any soil type with average moisture to dry soils (sandy, rocky, clay).
Chives is old culinary herb, but more and more is used in ornamental horticulture, because it very tough, adaptable, easy to grow and can surprisingly handle lot of drought and heat - so it can be used in shallow soil or roof garden with thinner layer of substrate.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Deer and rabbit resistant, attracts butterflies and bees.
Chives is native to many states of USA, but it grows in the temperate zone around the globe. It's also in cultivation for very long and sometimes escaped from gardens, so it's quite difficult to distinguish the wild forms from the cultivated forms.
