More robust cultivar with white-spurred flowers with maroon centers in early spring. Very rich flowering - mature clump has up to 100 flowering stems. Tough and dry shade tolerant perennial.
Superior selection from plant breeder Darrel Probst (2004).
18-24" tall x 24-36" wide clumps, dark green leaves with softer spines, partially evergreen (depending on the zone). Flowers in April/May.
Half shade, full shade, average soil, clayish soil, loam, humus soil - soil amended with organic matter or leaf compost. Average moisture (medium) to medium-moist or medium-dry.
Slow grower, slower to established, but long-lived plant. Grows fairly well in dry shade, in high-competitive root zone of trees or shrubs.
Hardy in zones 5 to 8.
Deer and rabbit resistant plant, tolerates black walnuts.
Best in small groups as groundcover in half shade or shade garden, under trees, or in dry shade.
Excellent companion for hosta. Other great combinations are with Actaea (Cimicifuga), Aruncus, Brunnera, Dicentra, Helleborus, Lilium martagon, Polygonatum, Tricyrtis, ferns and spring ephemerals like Mertensia, Trillium, Sanquinaria,... and grasses like Carex or Hakonechloa.
