Grasses
Native ornamental grasses or sedges (Carex) for your garden. North American flora offers an abundance of very ornamental grasses in wild forms and nowadays also in many nativars. These come originally from prairies, savannas, woodland clearing or deep shade woodlands.
We recommend to avoid highly invasive non-native grasses in all cultivars of Chinese grass* and other invasives such as maiden grass (Miscanthus ssp.), cogongrass (Impereta cylindrica), reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea). In drier areas of southern states avoid uruguayan pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), hardy pampas grass* (Erianthus ravennae), fountain grass (Pennisetum rubrum, P. setaceum and possibly others).
*May be safe in cooler areas, but still prefer varieties with sterile seeds like 'Hinjo', 'Cabaret', 'Silberpfeil' or Miscanthus x giganteus, more here.
