Little known, non-aggresive and showy perennial sunflower.
Height variable, depending on conditions, from 4 to 6.5' tall x 1.5-2' wide. Opposite and rather large leaves (6" x 5")stay at the base only, long bare stems carry 2-3" wide golden-yellow flowers in August to September/October.
Blooms for 3-4 weeks at least.
Full sun to half shade, very adaptable to soil conditions - from sandy soils to clay. Average (medium) moist soils to dry. Good plant for garden conditions and garden soils. Tolerates droughts.
This sunflower has short rhizomes, so it doesn't spread and stays in clumps, but it may selfseed if happy.

Like other perennial sunflowers, this one is very beneficial - flower attract many native pollinators (bumblebees, long-horned bees, leaf-cutter bees, Halictid bees, Andrenid bees, dagger bees, plasterer bees, cuckoo bees, miscellaneous wasps, Syrphid flies, bee flies) and variety of butterflies and skippers and other insects. Seed attracts Upland gamebirds and songbirds (Mourning Dove, Bobwhite Quail, American Crow, Eastern Goldfinch, Common Grackle, Eastern Meadowlark, White-breasted Nuthatch and sparrows).
Unfortunately deer and big mammals eat the stems and sometimes leaves too.
Suitable for pollinator garden, bird garden, butterfly garden, cut flower garden, more to naturalistic plantings, but due it's god behavior it's suitable even for conventional flower beds - if used as a background plant.
Good companions are taller plants like Amsonia, Aster, Baptisia, Echinacea, Helenium, Hemerocallis, Iris x barbata, Phlox paniculata, Rudbeckia, and medium to tall grasses (Pennisetum - where not invasive, Muhlenbergia, Panicum, Sorghastrum, Sporobolus).
