Red Hot Poker with grayish yucca-like leaves that stay pretty for most of the year. Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society (RHS, Britain).
2.5-3' tall and wide clumps, flowers from July to August/September with typical orange-yellow flowers.
Full sun, half sun, average to loamy soils with average moisture. Intolerant of wet, heavy waterlogged soils (especially in winter). Prefers consistent moisture, but it will tolerate some droughts.
Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Some mulch, straw or leaves winter protection on plan's crowns might be useful in zones 5/6.
Deer and rabbit resistant, attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
Originates in Drakesberg mountains in South Africa, in high elevation on wet grassland meadows and marshes.
Best in sunny borders, combined with lower growing plants around, or medium tall perennials or grasses.
