Showy milkweed that is more suitable for garden conditions, because it doesn't spread that aggressively (reminds of aggressive A. syriaca - Common Milkweed).
Usually 3' tall x 1-1.5' wide clumps. Larger grayish leaves (up to 8"), clusters of purplish-rose flowers in May/June to July.
Full sun the best (doesn't tolerate shade), any soils that are medium moist to dry. Very drought tolerant plant, pest and disease free perennial, that can thrive in lean, gritty or sandy soils.
Hardy in zones 3 to 9.

Excellent source of nectar for hummingbirds and pollinators, host plant for monarch caterpillars. Deer and rabbit resistant plant.
It can selfseed, to prevent this, remove the seedheads before the pods open.
Best for sunny flower bed, naturalistic planting, prairie gardens, dry meadows or slopes, pollinator gardens, monarch or hummingbird gardens. It is easy to grow, but the roots don't like to be disturbed due to deep tap root - so choose the spot wisely.
Majestic looking plant, if supported with delicate looking perennial companions like Agastache, Asters with smaller flowers, Achillea millefolium, Calamintha nepeta, Coreopsis verticillata, Gaura, Liatris, Nepeta, Penstemon, Perovskia, Pycnanthemum, Salvia or Solidago graminifolia. Naturally looks amazing with fine-leaved grasses.
