Rich deep chocolate burgundy, dark stems, raspberry buds that open into rosy purple flowers.
Emerging leaves are yellow with a dark margin with a glossy sheen that become completely dark as they age.
Later blooming Astilbe (August), more tolerant to sun and drought than other cultivars.

USDA Zones: 4 to 9
Culture: half to full shade; tolerates full sun in cooler areas or under irrigation. Loam, organic rich soil, average soil amended with some organic matter - ideally slightly acidic soil or neutral, heat, humidity tolerant. Grows quite well in clayish soils.
Moisture Needs: average (medium), medium-moist to moist, is only moderately tolerant to droughts
Origin: cross of Astilbe thunbergia 'Chocolate Shogun' (as a female parent, PP26,430) and Astilbe chinensis ‘Purpurkerze’ ('Purple Candles' (as a male parent, not patented). Patented under PP35461, introduced by the Walters Gardens.

Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes - some bees, potentialy smaller butterflies

Plant Combinations: Goes well with most of the partial shade/shade loving perennials, groundcovers and smaller to medium-sized shrubs. Looks the best combined with (slightly) more robust/rough structures - for example with big leaves of Alchemilla, Anemone hupehensis (japonica hybrids), Bergenia, Brunnera, Heuchera, Hosta, Phlox paniculata hybrids (in half shade), Podophyllum, Polygonatum (Solomon's Seal), Pulmonaria, Tradescantia.
Other good companion can be Actaea (Cimicifuga), Ajuga, Aquilegia, Astrantia (in cooler areas), Chelone lyonii, Chrysogonum, Dicentra spectabilis, Digitalis, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate', Geranium hybrids, Geranium maculatum, Geum, Lamium, Galium, Polemonium, Primula, Tricyrtis, Waldsteinia and grasses like Carex (both very narrow-leaved or wide-leaved) or Hakonchloa.
