Athyrium filix-femina - LADY FERN
Deciduous fern, native to all states of USA, Canada (and also Europe and Asia).
Usually 2'-3' tall and 2' wide, finely divided, lacy-cut fresh green leaves, with reddish central petioles. The leaves (fronds) usually become somewhat tattered in mid summer. Erect clumps, doesn't spread.
Half shade, shade, medium moisture to medium dry. Tolerates more dry soil than other ferns, and can be grown in full sun, if the soil stays constantly moist.
Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Deer resistant, rabbit tolerant plant.
Easy to grow fern for half shade to full shade garden, rock garden, along the streams etc. Good companion to Epimedium, Hosta, Helleborus, spring ephemerals, all the woodland perennials and grasses like Carex, Deschampsia caespitosa, Chasmantium latifolium or Hakonechloa.
