$13.99

Long-lived, tough, and reliable, this robust and vigorous barrenwort forms attractive ground-covering mounds with larger heart-shaped leaves and coppery-orange flowers.

It spreads slowly and is especially useful in dry shade, including under established trees and even in areas affected by black walnut. Its airy, branched flowering stems can reach up to 24 inches long, adding movement and texture in spring.

This is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance perennial that is generally pest and disease free. In warmer zones, the foliage remains evergreen to semi-evergreen. Cut back winter-damaged leaves in late winter to improve the flower display in spring.

Bloom Time: April to May
Size: 9 to 12 inches tall and wide
USDA Zones: 4/5 to 8/9
Heat Zones: 5 to 8

Culture: Best in half shade, light shade, dappled shade, and other partially shaded locations. Prefers medium, medium-dry, to medium-moist conditions and adapts to a range of soils, including clay-loam, loam, and rocky ground. Best performance is in neutral to slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter such as decaying leaves, compost, or humus. In hotter climates, it benefits from additional shade.

Moisture Needs: Medium, medium-dry, to medium-moist. Established plants are drought tolerant.

Origin: Garden origin. Introduced by noted German plant breeder Ernst Pagels. A cross between Epimedium alpinum and Epimedium pinnatum ssp. colchicum.

Deer Resistant: Yes
Rabbit Resistant: Yes
Attracts Butterflies/Pollinators: Very little
Attracts Hummingbirds: No

Garden Uses: Excellent for woodland gardens, part-shade borders, dry shade plantings, and shaded rock garden edges. A strong choice for gardens of any size.

Plant Combinations: Combines beautifully with Aquilegia, Anemone hupehensis, Asarum, Astrantia, Brunnera, Bergenia, Dicentra, Digitalis, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Galium odoratum, Geum, Heucherella, Heuchera, Hosta, Podophyllum, Phlox carolina hybrids, Phlox divaricata, Polemonium, Polygonatum, Primula, Persicaria amplexicaulis, Pulmonaria, Stylophorum, Tradescantia, Tiarella, Uvularia, and Viola.

It also pairs well with grasses such as Carex, Chasmanthium, and Hakonechloa, as well as ferns and spring ephemerals such as Mertensia, Sanguinaria, and Trillium.

Pot Size: Square 3.5-inch pot, 4 inches deep
