Yellow flowers (about 6" wide) and, reddish stems.

Prefers full sun, half shade, grows well in average soils with average moisture, or medium moist soil to moist-wet soils, adaptable.

Magnet for many native bees, honeybees, bumblebees, Syrphid flies, butterflies, and beetles. Host plant for larvae stages of many insects. The seeds of sunflowers are eaten by many birds during the fall and winter (Mourning Dove, White-Winged Crossbill, Eastern Goldfinch, Black-Capped Chickadee, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse, Bobwhite Quail, and various sparrows) and small mammals.

This is colonial plant that can spread aggressively by rhizomes and requires room, so it is not suitable for small landscaping. It's better for naturalizing in, meadows, prairies, wetland edges, moist banks or restorations.
