Heuchera americana 'Palace Purple' - CORAL BELLS 'PALACE PURPLE'
Oldie, but oldie cultivar ‘Palace Purple’ with purple-brown-red leaves and insignificant pale flowers.
It scored quite well at Mt. Cuba Center’s Heuchera trial, gaining 3.6 starts out of 5! It didn't place higher mostly only due to it's inconsistent look - which is understandable since it is mostly only seed propagated strain cultivar and the seedlings do vary - some have better brown coloration, some have more green-brown color.
It is still an excellent performer in partial shade/light shade garden. This heuchera also can seed around and keeps that coloration - which is great, since most coral bells are not long-lived plants.
Some extra mulch is helpful in cooler areas. It's recommended to divide after 3-4 years to sustain the vigor and prevent the woody stems.
The little flowers offer nectar to hummingbirds. Tolerant to black walnuts and drier shade.
Blooming Time: late June to early August
Size: 13” tall (30” with flowers) x 30” wide, spacing 18-24”
USDA Zones: 4 to 9
Culture: half shade, dappled shade, lighter shade (grows best with 4 or less hours of sunshine), grows well in average soil, tolerates drier shade
Moisture Needs: medium, medium-moist
Origin: Garden origin. The botanical species of H. americana is native to the eastern half of USA (from Texas diagonally to the northeast). See the BONAP distribution map.
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: little bees
Attracts Hummingbirds: yes
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" perennial pot
Plant combinations: best in partial shade to lighter shade garden - on edges, looks excellent with sedges or Hakonechloa. Other good companions can be shorter Anemone, Amsonia, Chrysogonum, Dicentra, Gillenia, Helleborus, other Heuchera, Hosta, Epimedium, Monarda clinopodia, Iris tectorum, Lilium martagon, Polygonatum, Primula, Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', Silene virginica, Spigelia, Uvularia, and many more.
