Iris domestica (Belamcanda chinensis) - BLACKBERRY LILY
Exotic looking, summer blooming perennial with sword-shaped, iris-like leaves.
Usually 3' tall (2' without flowers) x 0.75-1' wide. Wiry stems with smaller 2" wide orange freckled flowers in July to August, followed with clusters of shiny black berries that persist to winter months.
Full sun, half sun, average soil with medium moisture to medium-dry, loamy soils or moderately fertile soils. Prefers somewhat drained soils, especially excessive winter moisture can kill the plant. Slowly spread by short rhizomes, more often seeds some around and that's the way how it stays in the garden (often is shorter-lived).
Deer and rabbit resistant.
Native to Himalays, Russian Far East, China, Taiwan and Japan.
Easy to grow, pest and disease free plant. In optimum condition can seed some, so deadhead to prevent too many seedlings.
Roots are used in traditional chinese medicine (respiratory and irregular menstrual cycle remedy etc.)
For sunny flower beds, herb gardens, as an exotic accent in summer garden.
Pot size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
