Sanguisorba hybrida 'Plum Drops' - BURNET 'PLUM DROPS'
'Plum Drops' = heavily blooming burnet with wine-colored bottlebrush flowers on sturdy stems. Healthy ornamental foliage. Airy upright structure.
Clumping perennial, prefers a bit cooler climates (not suitable for deep south).
Blooming Time: early summer to mid summer, with light reblooming in earyl fall
Size: 3-4' tall x 1.5-2' wide
USDA Zones: 4 to 8
Culture: full sun, mostly sun, half shade (appreciates some afternoon shade in hotter climates). Average soils, moderately fertile to fertile. Adaptable. It likes some moisture, so the best are the soils, that don't dry out easily, but this is tough plant, so it will tolerate some shorter term drought too. Does very well in heavier soils and clay (moisture retaining soils).
Moisture Needs: average (medium) to medium-moist, wet
Origin: hybrid of several species with most likely dominant Sanguisorba officinalis, which is native wildflower to cooler states of USA - Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, but also California, Oregon and Washington. Great Burnet is also native to Europe and Asia. Introduced by Brent Horvath from Intrinsic Perennials (Hebron, IL) in 2023.
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: no - deer can nibble on the leaves / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes/yes, bees and butterflies
Attracts Hummingbirds: no, but attracts small song birds
Pot Size: 3.5" wide x 4" deep pot
Plant Combinations: Excellent addition to flowering meadow, naturalistic gardens, cottage gardens, or even prairie planting, bigger rain gardens. Herb gardens, edible gardens.
Good companions Aster, Echinacea, Helianthus, Helenium, Hemerocallis, Iris, Lobelia, Monarda, Phlox, Physostegia, Rudbeckia, Solidago, Silphium, Tradescantia, Vernonia, Veronicastrum, etc. and taller ornamental grasses (Panicum, Sorgastrum)
Good cut flower.
