Product Description
Early blooming, semi-evergreen ornamental grass with tidy clumps, that meets in bloom with spring bulbs.
12-16" tall and wide (20" tall with flowers), starts sprouting green, but soon gray-bluish coloration appears on the bottom part of the leaves. Blooms very early in April/May when the flowers are purple-black to black, later with cream pollen sack and mature to less significant dry seedheads.
Half shade seems to be the best, but also full sun in cooler areas or in spots with more constant moisture. Average soils, clay, loam, adaptable.
Average moisture (medium) to slightly moist (medium-moist) soils. Established plants will tolerate some droughts.
Hardy in zones 4 to 9.
Deer and rabbit resistant, virtually pest and diseases free, tolerates some salinity and black walnuts.
Native to areas from Southeastern Europe, eastwards to Caucasus Mountains.
Looks good throughout the whole season, can be cut back to refresh or just hand-cleaned from the old leaves. Best as groundcover grass, in small groups or masses, for the front of the flower bed, or rock garden, combined with bulbs and many common perennials and taller grasses.
