Culture: Sun to half sun, adaptable to many soils (sandy, sandy loam, clay Loam, clay). It will grow in any site except wet, very alkaline soils or in deep shade. Drought, heat, humidity and salinity (salt) tolerant.
Moisture Needs: average (medium) to medium-dry, seasonally dry (no additional irrigation)
Origin: Central and eastern USA from Texas diagonally up to northeast and Canada, see the BONAP distribution map. It naturally occurs in roadsides, open woods or old fields that are turning into meadows.
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes/yes (can be browsed only in early spring)
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: attracts moths and butterflies and also is a host plant for Cross-line skipper, Broad-winged skipper, Little Glassywing skipper, Large Wood Nymph. Provides good nesting material for smaller songbirds.
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
