Cultivar 'Valerie Finnis' has wider leaves, little bit more compact growth, 2.5' tall x 3' wide and doesn't spread that much.
So it's more suitable for flower beds, smaller gardens or landscaping.
Full sun, half shade, adaptable to many soil types, that stay medium to dry (including clay). But the best is drier and drained soil (shallower, rocky, poorer, sandy, gravelly, or simply drained soil), because if planted in rich and moist soil, it becomes a bit leggy or even floppy.
Species of A. ludoviciana is native perennial to most of states of USA and Canada.
Deer an rabbit resistant plant. It attracts sveral grasshoppers, and is host plant for larvae of one native moth. Hardy in zones 3 to 7.
Looks good with perennials like Aster (A. novae-angliae, A. laevis, A. oblongifolius), Asclepias tuberosa, Baptisia, Echinacea (E. angustifolia, pallida, paradoxa, tennesseensis), Rudbeckia, Monarda fistulosa, Salvia,..Even this plant is suitable for smaller gardens, you may have to keep an eye on how much it spreads.
