Aster alpinus 'Happy End' - ALPINE ASTER 'HAPPY END'
Probably the earliest blooming aster. Alpine aster is native to Europe, Asia and North America. ' Happy Star' is selection with warm pink and slightly bigger flowers. Probably the best in cooler areas or with somewhat cooler summers.
Short-lived perennial that will self-seed if allowed.
Flowers in May - June, clumps of smaller leaves, full height in flower is about 8-10" x 10-12" wide.
Best in full sun, half shade, average garden soil; prefers drier, drained, or rocky soils that are not too fertile. Medium-dry, medium moist soils
Hardy in zones 5 to 7.
Origin: native to Colorado, Alaska, Ontario, and the western half of Canada, see the USDA distribution map.
Deer avoids it, but rabbit may nibble on the plants. Attracts butterflies and some bees.
Excellent for rock gardens, alpine troughs, crevice gardens, drained soils, and the front of any sunny border (if the soil is drained). Spots with full sun and good air circulation will reduce the chance of powdery mildew. Alpine aster prefers cooler summer temperatures and will suffer in overly hot and humid climates. It is a nice cut flower, although it has shorter stems than other asters.
Pot size : square 3.5' x 5" deep pot
