Aster umbellatus (Doellingeria umbellata) - FLAT-TOPPED ASTER

No reviews yet
Product Code: AST-UMB-X
Shipping: Calculated at Checkout
$7.99

This is an early flowering aster that blooms in umbels of smaller, cream-white flowers with yellow centers. It starts flowering much earlier than other asters, and continues until September.

It attracts a wide range of native pollinators. It's palatable to mammals and wild turkey, so it may be difficult to establish where deer are overpopulated. It can self-seed and will spread by rhizomes, but not aggressively.

Perfect for flower beds, meadows, naturalistic plantings, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and rain gardens.

Blooming Time: July - September
Size:
5' tall x 2-3' wide
USDA Zones:
3 to 9
Culture:
full sun, half shade; prefers sandy loam or loam, will grow fine in average garden soil and will probably tolerate some clay too.
Moisture Needs:
average to moist/wet
Origin:
native to East/Central North America (USDA distribution map)
Deer/Rabbit Resistant:
no / no
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators:
long- and short-tongued bees, wasps, flies, beetles and butterflies
Attracts Hummingbirds:
no; swamp sparrows feed on the seed
Pot Size:
 3.5" x 4" perennial pot
