Baptisia alba is an upright native perennial. While in its blooming peak, it is a true show stopper - spikes of white pea-like flowers compliment the bluish-green foliage. The upper parts of the spikes and the bracts holding the flowers are charcoal-gray, so the color combination is truly beautiful. The seed pods, which mature to a black color, are also considered ornamental.
It can grow in many types of soil; the bacteria on the roots are able to fix and access nitrogen. It's a long-lived perennial, but is a bit slower to establish in the first years and doesn't like to be transplanted, so choose the right spot for it. It is unpalatable to mammals.
It looks good in prairie style plantings, meadows or naturalized, but can also be used in borders, cottage or pollinator gardens.
