Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' is one of the top performers in Mt. Cuba's Baptisia trials and here is why :
- 150 inflorescenses on mature clump, flowers in late May for 3 weeks
- dense and medium sized clumps are suitable for any, even smaller garden, size usually 3-4' tall and wide
- dark charcoal sprouting stems persist through flowering period and are great complement color to pale purple flowers
- tough and adaptable, long-lived and drought tolerant perennial
- deer and rabbit resistant plant
- easy to grow nativar, attracts bumblebees and butterflies
It will grow fine with any average soil (to rocky or clayish too), full sun or with little bit of shade during the day (half-shade). Hardiness zones 3 to 9.
Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' is hybrid between Baptisia australis and Baptisia alba and it was discovered as a chance seedling in a trial bed at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in the early 1990s.
Perfect for sunny borders, cottage gardens, prairies, meadows, sunny or half-shaded woodland edges or erosion control. Can be combined with many perennials.
