Vigorous plant. Spreads moderately into wide ground-covering clumps.
Large 2.5" tubular deep blue-purple flowers.
Doesn't seem to be bothered by the humidity and black walnut presence.
Blooming time : June-July, with some reblooming later on
Size: 24" (up to 30" in loam) tall x 1.5' wide and spreading wide by rhizomes, forms up to 3' wide colonies
USDA Zones: 4 to 9
Culture: full sun to half shade, dappled sun. In hotter climates may appreciates afternoon (or some) shade. Quite easy to grow in average soil with average moisture. Average soil with some organic matter. Seems to tolerate some droughts. Avoid too dry and wet and waterlogged soils.
Moisture Needs: average - medium
Origin: Japan, Korea, China and also Siberia, where can be found along forest edges, in thickets and meadows
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes if the pressure isn't high
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: attracts honeybees and potentially some native bees (not verified)
Attracts Hummingbirds: not confirmed

Plant Combinations: Very showy plant for the front of the bed, along paths, cottage gardens, woodland edge gardens.
Goes well with majority of common perennials (native and non-native), lets mention at least plants like Achillea, Agastache, summer blooming Allium, Amsonia, Aquilegia, Aruncus, Aster, Baptisia, Calamintha, shorter cultivars of Eupatorium, Geranium, Hemerocallis (daylilly), Iris sibirica, Leucanthemum x superbum, taller Nepeta, Origanum, Paeonia, Perovskia, Persicaria amplexicaules, tall Phlox and hybrids, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Stachys.
And medium to taller grasses like Pennisetum (where not invasive), Panicum, Hakonechloa or Carex.
