Vigorous, very dark black/brown-leaved selection of Asian Bugbane. 2' long flowering spikes with small fragrant white flowers (fragrance reminds of grape or jasmine).
Best in sunny woodland edge garden with moist soil. Slower growing, but long-lived perennial. The best leaf color can be achieved in sunny garden (with constantly moist soil).
With more shade the leaves turn greenish-black.
The whole plant is toxic to mammal herbivores.
Best as a background plants or colorful accent in partially shaded, or cooler garden conditions. Good companions are Astilbe, Astilboides tabularis, Bergenia, Brunnera, Darmera, Geranium, more robust Heuchera, Hemerocallis, medium/large Hosta, Lilium (some shade tolerant species), Persicaria amplexicaulis, Rodgersia and ferns.
Can be combined with smaller-medium sized flowering shrubs like Hydrangea quercifolia, Hydrangea arborescens (or non-native Hydrangea macrophylla); suitable native perennial companions can be Aster (woodland species), Helianthus divaricatus (woodland sunflower), Heliopsis helianthoides, Chelone, Physostegia, Rudbeckia triloba, Senna, Solidago caesia and grasses like Calamagrostis brachytricha, Hakonechloa macra or Carex.
