"Like others in this genus, 'Gateway' is no exception in its power to attract butterflies with its huge, bright mauve-pink flower clusters atop deep wine red stems. Robust 5' tall x 3-5' wide clumps, but more compact and bushier than the species.

Large clusters of flowers (12" in diameter) in late summer and fall. Long-lasting, seedheads persist till winter months.

Full sun (with moist soil), half sun, half shade. Prefers good garden soil, or moist loam, moist, medium-moist. Clay and wet soil tolerant. Some shade or afternoon shade is appreciated in hot climates.

Hardy in zones 4-8.

Black walnut tolerant plant.

Deer and rabbit resistant, attracts Monarch butterflies, butterflies, native bees, honeybees and small songbirds, provides nesting material.

Great cut flower. Suitable for flower beds, pollinator gardens, monarch gardens, bird gardens, prairie planting, naturalistic plantings, for erosion control.

Best used as a background plant or in the middle of the flower bed. Good perennial companions are medium sized and taller plants like Aster novae-angliae, Heliopsis helianthoides, Helenium autumnale, Helianthus (sunflower), Hibiscus mocheutos hybrids, Leucanthemum superbum (tall cultivars), Liatris,tall Phloxes, Monarda, Rudbeckia fulgida, Rudbeckia laciniata, Vernonia and taller grasses like Calamagrostis, Pennisetum, Panicum, Molinia arundinacea.
