Coreopsis major - GREATER TICKSEED (for hot, poor, shallow or drier soil)

Product Code: COR-MAJ-X
Shipping: Calculated at Checkout
$7.99

Virtually unknown perennial in north American horticulture, but promising, tough, heat, drought and humidity resistant!

This native wildflower comes from south East, eastern and north-eastern states, where it grows on sandy, rocky slopes, shale barrens, gritty hills.

Usually 2.5-3' x 1-2' wide upright clumps somewhat reminding of robust Coreopsis verticillata.

Also called whorled-leaf coreopsis.

About 2" yellow flowers atop the sturdy stems from May/June to July/August. Plants can spread a little by rhizomes and self seed, but never aggressively.

Unfortunately this Coreopsis didn't get the best ratings at Mt. Cuba Coreopsis trials, but is adored by horticulturalists in other places and we believe that the key to successful growing is the poorer and drier soil (without thick layer of wood chips or bark mulch). So finding the right spot has to be it.

We used to grow in continental climate of central Europe, on average, medium to medium-dry soil, where it was reliable, well performing and long-lived clump perennial.

Finally we managed to grow it here and we want to trial it properly too.

Since it is extremely heat humidity and drought tolerant plant, with very good health and long flowering season through the major part of summer, we think it's more than worth it. Another good thing is, that it has some tolerance to shade, so it should do fairly well in dry shade (that is not too deep)

Hardy in zones 5 to 8, deer and rabbit resistant (this may differ in areas with overpopulated deer). Attracts butterflies and pollinators.

See the USDA distribution map. It's native range reaches Indiana too, but can be found only in one south-eastern county.

Sunny flower beds with drier or drained soils (also sandy, rocky, poor soils), pollinators gardens, roof gardens, shallow soil gardens, butterfly gardens and for naturalization. Great cut flower too.

Excellent customer service, plants arrived dormant and healthy, cleverly packaged for protection, and nicely priced. Looking forward to seeing them in spring.
