Fine-textured native grass with delicate appearance. For cooler northern areas (dislikes hotter zones than 7).
Adaptable to soil conditions, best in half shade or shade garden, tolerates dry shade!
Flowers gracefully move in the wind, mature to golden in summer.
Fine semi-evergreen leaves, cool season grass.
Blooming Time: early to late summer
Size: usually 2’ tall with flowers x 1-2' wide (in good conditions up to 3' tall)
USDA Zones: 4 to 7
Culture: part sun (full sun in cool area), half shade, dappled shade, not fussy about the soil - average garden with some organic matter, to somewhat drained soil (rocky, gritty, sandy).
Moisture Needs: medium-moist, medium, medium-dry, dry. Tolerant to dry shade.
Origin: Circumpolar species native to Eurasia and North America - part of central USA, Midwest, southeastern USA, see the BONAP distribution map. Can be found in opening in dry woods, slopes, grasslands, rocky slopes and coastlines on mesic or xeric soils (in nature preferably slightly acidic).
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: not known
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes (host plant for Lepidoptera)
Attracts Hummingbirds: no, but it attracts little birds, providing nesting material for birds and small mammals.
Pot Size: 3.5" x 4" perennial pot (1.22 pt/580 ml)
Plant combinations: For beds, woodland garden, woodland edges, dry shade garden, cottage gardens, difficult to identify sun/shade transition areas, matrix plantings, naturalization and even roof gardens. Goes well with shade-loving perennials, but best to combined with not too aggressive species and bigger-leaved perennials like clumping ferns, Bergenia, Brunnera, Dicentra, Epimedium, Geranium, Helleborus, Omphalodes, Hakonechloa, Hosta and native perennials like Anemone, Aquilegia canadensis, Gillenia, Phlox divaricata, Polemonium repens, Polygonatum diphyllum, Stylophorum diphyllum, woodland Asters or sedges like Carex plantaginea and may more.
