Digitalis x mertonensis - STRAWBERRY FOXGLOVE
A bit shorter foxglove with coppery-rose to strawberry rose flowers in May to June. Shorter-lived or biennial. Sometimes sold under commercial name 'Summer King'.
2-3' tall x 1-2' wide, basal leaves, 2-3" pendulous tubular flowers attract hummingbirds.
Full sun to half shade. Average soil with average moisture (medium, medium-moist, medium-dry). Avoid waterlogged soils.
Tetraploid hybrid between Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis grandiflora, lives usually 2-3 years, but selfseeds some around. Plants can be divided every year to maintain the vigor or deadheaded to prolong the lifespan.
Hardy in zones 4-8. Deer and rabbit resistant - toxic to all mammals, including humans!
