Slower growing, but with amazing spring chocolate-maroon leaf color in the spring and dense clusters of large cream-white flowers above the foliage.

12-16" tall x 18-24" wide clumps, flowers in April-May, spiny-edged and evergreen leaves mature to green in summer.

Rather slowly to establish, but long-lived perennial (like all the Epimediums).

Half sun, half shade to full shade. Average soils to drier soil, adaptable (best neutral to slightly acidic soils).

Suitable for zones 6 to 8 (possibly colder).

The parent - Epimedium wushanense is vigorous Chinese species, this selection is introduced by plant hunter and breeder Darrell Probst in 2006 (originally without a name) and re-introduced in 2012 under cultivar name 'Sandy Claws'.

Patented, propagation is prohibited.

Best in half shade to full shade garden, shade rock garden, woodland garden, dry shade garden.

Combine with shade lovers like Asarum, Bergenia, Brunnera, Caulophyllum, Chrysogonum, Dicentra, Geranium, Hosta, Iris cristata, I. tectorum, Kirengoshoma, Omphalodes, Polemonium, Phlox stolonifera, Phlox divaricata, Primula, Polygonatum, Pulmonaria, Stylophorum, Thalictrum, Tricyrtis, Waldsteinia.

Great perennial companions are also spring ephemerals like Claytonia, Mertensia, Jeffersonia, Podophyllum, Uvullaria, Trillium, grasses like Carex, Calamagrostis or Hakonechloa and many ferns.

    The plants were in great condition and readily took when I planted them. I am trying to create more beds with a base of ground cover and like this ground cover for its interest and colors.
