This grass is native to southern and south eastern states, found in open woodlands, sandy areas and prairies and is hardy in zones 6 to 8. See the USDA distribution map.

Full sun, medium to dry, but always drained soils. Grows well in sandy soils too. Tolerant to black walnut and air pollution.

Warm season grass (that develops in summer), best for naturalizing, naturalistic or prairie plantings in drained soils, erosion control on dry slopes, for bigger containers, or cut flower garden.
