Probably the best tall Joe Pye Weed for the garden conditions - it tolerates summer heat and droughts much better than other Eupatorium and stays in good shape for the whole season (except extreme summer droughts).

In garden conditions usually doesn't reach it's full potential height, but in nature it is the biggest of joe pyeweeds, usually giant, because it prefers moist to wet fertile soils, where it can reach 10'.

Typical are hollow stems, giant round-shaped to bullet- shaped cluster of flowers and large strappy leaves usually five or more in whorls.

Great architectural native perennial wildflower, hollow stems, strictly upright strong clumps, good cut flower and beneficial pollinator, butterfly and monarch plant. Also called Giant Joe Pye Weed or Tall Joe Pye Weed.

Beautiful plant for the background of sunny or half-shaded flower bed. Can be used in butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, rain gardens, for erosion control, low maintenance plantings, roadsides, wet ditches, swales, on the water bodies banks and streams etc.

Good combination in flower bed with medium moist soil : Agastache, Actaea simplex, Aster novae-angliae, Aster novi-belgii, Chelone, Helenium, Helianthus, Heliopsis helianthoides, Iris lousiana, Iris virginica var. shrevei, Phlox paniculata, Phlox maculata, Physostegia, Rudbeckia, Silphium perfoliatum, Veronicastrum virginicum and grasses like Andropogon gerardii, Panicum virgatum.

With non-native perennials try these : Anemone hupehensis, Calamagrostis brachytricha, robust cultivars of Hemerocallis, Iris sibirica, Persicaria amplexiacaulis.

Blooming time : July/August to September

Size : usually about 6-7’ tall (only in rich moist soil up to 10' tall) x 3-4’ wide (can be shorter, even 5' in infertile or medium moist soil)

USDA zones : 3 to 8

Culture: full sun, half shade, tolerant to many soil types (sandy, loam, wet loam, clay, seeping gravel), but prefers some moisture - medium-wet to wet, fertile, humus-rich soil. But it tolerates heat, humidity and to certain point summer droughts, so it is good garden plants.
