Late-blooming native perennial with blue flowers and misleading name - this aster stays in clump and doesn't creep.

Adaptable to light conditions - from full sun to light (dappled) shade.

Best in dry or somewhat drained soils.

 

Blooming Time: August to October
Size: up to 3' tall x 1-1.5' wide (the height depends on the growing conditions - in lean and shallow soil, it can be only1' tall)
USDA Zones: 4 to 9
Culture: full sun, half shade, average soil, drained soils (rocky, sandy, gritty), dry clay.
Moisture Needs: medium to medium-dry, dry (in sharply draining soils tolerates even moist soil)
Origin: native to the eastern half of the USA - AL, GA, KY, NC, OH, SC, TN, VA and with scattered populations in MA, CT, DE and MD. Is often found on shallow soil, roadside slopes, along logging roads, dry roadbanks, edges, borders of pine stands, but also in wet well drained soils, in full sun to partial shade. Plant Combinations: Best in pollinator gardens, native plant gardens, in difficult to identify light conditions (edges with some sun and some shade during the day), on shallow soils, and difficult areas that tend to dry out. Can be combined with many native plants and their cultivars, Anemone, other Asters, Chrysogonum virginicum, Eupatorium coelestinum, Heliopsis, Helianthus divaricatus, Geranium, Gillenia, Heuchera, Rudbeckia, Vernonia, and many  medium sized grasses.
