Geum triflorum - PRAIRIE SMOKE
Native wilflower and charming prairie plant. One of the underused plants and one of the best Geum performers in Chicago Botanic Gardens trials, gaining 5 out of 5 stars!
Modern looking plant that is used for example in famous Lurie Garden in Chicago, designed by Piet Oudolf.
Forms clumps 10/17" tall (w/wo flowers) x 20" wide, slowly spreads wide.
Flowers are actually very small, more like white-pinkish, nodding buds with hardly visible petals - in early May to early July.
What makes this plants unique are the forming seedheads with fluffy purple-pink hair that wave in the breeze.
Full sun, half shade, somewhat drained soils, preferably not too rich, rather leaner with average moisture, medium to medium-dry up to dry. Sandy, gravelly, barren soils, average soils.
Drought tolerant plant with groundcovering growth, great filler among other not too robust plants that could smother it.
Also called Old man's whiskers.
Attracts pollinators, mainly bumblebees. Leaf beetles (Graphops marcassita) can feed on the leaves.
Deer and rabbit resistant plant, hardy in zones 3 to 7. Native to some Midwestern, central and western states of USA (and Canada), see the USDA distribution map.
Highly recommended for home landcaping, meadows, prairie inspired plantings, naturalistic plantings, rock gardens or naturalization.
Meets in flower with late flowering daffodils, late tulips or grape hyacinth (Muscari), but also with Coreopsis auriculata 'Nana', Geranium maculatum or Geranium sanquineum, Paeonia, Monarda bradburiana, bearded Iris, Nepeta x faasenii (we recommended to combine with smaller cultivars) Salvia nemorosa and Salvia x sylvestris hybrids.
Other suitable companions are for example Aster (A. divaricatus, Aster leavis 'Bluebird', A. 'Purple Dome' or 'Vibrant Dome'), Calamintha nepeta ssp. nepeta, Heuchera sanquinea, Monarda punctata, smaller Oenothera, Penstemon, Ruellia humilis or Sedum telephium (or short sedum), Sisyrinchium angustifolium, Stokesia laevis, and of course shorter grasses like Bouteloua, Muhlenbergia, Koeleria cristata or Sporobolus.
