
Helianthus angustifolius 'First Light' - NARROW-LEAVED SUNFLOWER 'FIRST LIGHT'
Very late bloomer, usually one of the last flowers in the garden in cooler zones!
Large 2.5-3" golden flowers, fuzzy narrow dark green leaves, somewhat shiny.
Upright growth.
Blooming Time: September to October
Size: 3-4' tall x 2-3' wide clumps
USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 6-9
Culture: Full sun, average soil, clayish (slightly moist, medium, medium-dry), sandy soils. Seasoanaly wet soils. Tolerates half shade, but less sun can lead to flopping (especially in rich soil). Tolerant to salt = suitable for coastal areas
Moisture Needs: average, established plants tolerate drought.
Origin: Selected by Keith Hammett in 1992, in Massey, Auckland, in New Zealand. Comes from a cross of the Helianthus 'Golden Pyramid' (the female) with the Helianthus 'Autumn Glory'. Plant was patented under PP13,150, but the patent expired in 2022.
The species of Helianthus angustifolius in native from Texas diagonally east to north-eastern states, including many Midwestern states, see the BONAP distribution map. Can be found on bottomlands, floodplains, on variety of soils (from sandy to loam)
Black Walnut Tolerant: yes
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes (but could be browsed, where overpopulated deer)
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes/yes
Attracts Hummingbirds: no, but seedheads attract small birds (don't cut them off too early)
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot,
Plant Combinations: Best in sunny garden, pollinator gardens, bird gardens, rain gardens, flower beds.Goes well with majority of common native and non-native perennials and grasses. Suitable for coastal areas.
