Heliopsis helianthoides 'Sundial' - OX EYE 'SUNDIAL' (FALSE SUNFLOWER)
Heliopsis 'Sundial' = upright, clump forming perennial with striking color contrast of gold flowers with red eyes and complement the dark olive-green foliage.
Hardy and vigorous. Great cut flower. Attracts butterflies and bees.
Blooming Time: mid to late summer
Size: 48-54" tall x 42" wide clumps
USDA Zones: 3 to 9
Culture: full sun, half shade, virtually any medium from clay to shallow, rocky soil, tolerant of heat and humidity.
Moisture Needs: dry to moist (preferably average moisture, which will keep the plants from looking stressed).
Origin: A Jelitto seed selection. The wild form of H. helianthoides is native to the most states in the central and eastern USA (see the USDA distribution map).
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes (some nibbling may occur, if deer overpopulated)
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes / yes
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4' deep perennial pot
Plant combinations: Excellent border plant, for middle of the beds. Looks good as a single plant in smaller flower beds or in groups in a bigger border. Due to its adaptability, it can be combined with typical border or more natural perennials like Asclepias tuberosa, Agastache, Chrysanthemum, Echinacea, Echinops, Eupatorium, Geranium 'Rozanne', Helenium, Liatris, Lupinus, Monarda, Penstemon digitalis, Perovskia, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Salvia nemorosa, Sedum telephium (Sedum x hybridum), Veronicastrum, Vernonia, and many many others.
It's a very good companion to the most popular perennials in the USA - bearded Iris, Siberian iris and daylilies (Hemerocallis); it will also look good with taller or tall grasses like Andropogon gerardii, Panicum virgatum (switch grass), Schizachyrium scoparium, Sporobolus heterolepis, Pennisetum, or summer flowering shrubs like Hydrangea arborescens or Hydrangea paniculata.
