Hydrangea 'Ruby Slippers' is compact and faster growing selection of native shrub. Flowers start white, soon fade to pinkish and mature to ruby red. The oak-reminding leaves turn deep mahogony red tones in cooler fall temperetures.
Blooming Time: June to July
Size: 3-4’ tall and 3-5' wide
USDA Zones: 5 to 9 (in zone 5 may need a bit sheltered spot, and some protection for newly planted smaller plants)
Culture: Best in full to half shade, or very light dappled shade. Ideal soils are organically rich, well-drained soils with average moisture. In southern states appreciates some shade.
Moisture Needs: medium, medium-moist
Origin: The species of H. quercifolia is shrub native to AL, DC, F, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC,TN, IN (see the BONAP distribution map). Natural habitats include shaded woods, shaded stream banks
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: only moderately deer resistant - deer nibbles on the soft parts and buds in the winter. Later in the season it's usually avoided, unless the deer is overpopulated.
