Phlomis tuberosa - SAGE-LEAF MULLEIN
Most likely unknown in USA, charming and non-spreading perennial, native to Central, southeastern Europe and Asia.
Forms quite dense clumps of green at the ground, toothed leaves, reddish and nearly bare stems carry small pink flower in clusters. Size 4' tall x 1.5' wide, slender looking plant with great vertical accent. Flowers May/June-July and attracts birds and honey bees.
Hardy in zones 4 to 9.
Stems stay upright after the flowering is finished through out the whole winter and are ornamental, can be used dried for flower arrangements.
Grows well in full sun or only partially shaded gardens, medium, medium-dry or dry soils. It's very drought resistant and can grow in very rocky soil. Prefers drained soils, this plant is not suitable for heavy wet clay.
Deer resistant perennial.
Suitable for sunny borders, xeriscape, dry flower beds, poor rocky or sandy soils.
It meets in flower and looks well with Nepeta hybrids, late Paeonia, Papaver orientale, Salvia nemorosa (Salvia x sylvestris hybrids) or roses.
But goes well with many perennials like Asclepias tuberosa, Aster oblongifolius, Echinacea, Eryngium, Geranium, bearded Iris, Stachys byzantina ....

Healthy young plant
I'm grateful to find this beautiful plant. It was healthy upon arrival and with several sturdy leaves. Can't wait until next year to see it bloom! A most welcome free gift arrived with my order. I'd be willing to pay for a supply of them.
