Robust fern that can reach royal size of 6' of height and 3' wide. Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society (UK, 1993).
The size depends on the soil and moisture, in average moist soil it can be only 2' tall and wide.
Loves moisture and best if planted in constantly moist to wet, rich soil (acid, neutral or alkaline), where it can tolerate full sun. Otherwise, plant in half shade or shade.
Adaptable, classy looking upright fern, with arching broadly divided and nicely fresh green leaves. Low maintenance plant, disease and pest free, rabbit and deer resistant. Leaves are deciduous and die back in winter. Damaged leaves can be removed without problems.
Hardy in zones 3 to 9 (heat zones 1-9), spacing 36". Native to eastern half of USA, see the USDA distribution map.
Excellent for moist to wet soils, woodland gardens, along streams, pond banks, water gardens.
