$9.99

This fairly recent variety offers a nice blue flower color and better mildew resistance. The flowers open a deep blue and take on purplish shades during the midday heat, then regain their original color in the evening. The stems are rather dark and support the amazing indigo-blue color. This variety did quite well in the Mt. Cuba Sun Phloxes trial (although it did not win outright) and is recommended for gardens in the Midwest. The flowers are scented with a light vanilla-clove fragrance and are great as cut flowers.

Tall phloxes flower for a long period of time, but deadheading or applying the "Chelsey chop" will prolong the blooming time even more. Forms regular upright clumps. As with any other tall garden phlox, it looks best if planted in the center of the flower bed because the stems naturally loose their leaves, so they're commonly placed behind lower-growing perennials. Best in flower beds, both private and public landscaping projects, cottage gardens, hummingbird and butterfly gardens, or some naturalization.

Beautiful combinations can be reached with yellow, crème, white, orange-yellow or pink flowers. If you prefer a native (or nativar) style of planting, we highly suggest these perennials:

Agastache (tall blue or bluish flowering, Agastache ‘Black Adder‘ ), lower varieties of Coreopsis tripteris, Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea tennesseensis, Eupatorium, Filipendula rubra ‘Venusta‘ or the wild form, Helenium, Monarda didyma, other varieties of Phlox paniculata, Rudbeckia maxima, Rudbeckia fulgida, annual R. hirta, Veronicastrum or cultivars of grass like Panicum virgatum.

Good non-native perennial partners include Astilbe chinensis (taller varieties), Astrantia major, Delphinium, Geranium, Geum x hybridum, Hemerocallis, Leucanthemum superbum, Lilium, Persicaria amplexicaulis, Sanguisorba, Scabiosa caucasica or Thalictrum.

Very charming combinations can also be achieved with nativars of native shrubs such as Hydrangea arborescens, non-native Hydrangea paniculata, or some roses in the background.
