Product Description
Another great and underused perennial in horticultural sphere...
Unusual look, interesting flowers and leaves, late flowering season, nitrogen fixing plant, well rooted (so it can't be bothered by any strong gusts or storms), clay tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, some shade tolerant, heat and humidity tolerant, no spreading in the garden, no diseases and adored by bumblebees and other insects! What a plant with benefits only! And you don't have it yet?
Full sun, half-shade, usually 5' tall x 3' wide (3' in dry soil), flowers July-August. Loamy soil, clay, but adaptable to rocky to sandy soils, medium moist to moist soils. Hardy in zones 3-8. In too rich soils grows into large size.
Plant for bumble bees, Halictic bees, ants, lady birds, and caterpillars of Sulfur butterflies (Sleepy Orange, Orange-Barred Sulfur, Cloudless Sulfur). Also caterpillars of Black Witch and Common Tan Wave moths feed on the leaves. The seeds may be eaten by some upland gamebirds, particularly the Bobwhite.
It can't be distinguished from it's sister Senna marilandica - the only difference are seedpod, S. marilandica keeps the pods on the plant for a long time, while S. hebecarpa opens the pods immediately when the seed are ripe.
Excellent plant for hedges (plant about 30" apart), as mid or rear plant in flower bed, sunnier edges of woodland garden, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, wildlife gardens. can be combined with many common perennials, or with shrubs, because it reminds of shrub.
Pot size : square 3.5'' x 4'' deep perennial pot
