Sesleria argentea - SILVER MOOR GRASS
Low maintenance, well behaved and semi-evergreen cool season grass.
Silvery-green foliage, dense groundcovering clumps, oval-shaped flowers from June till early-mid fall.
Regular and tidy growth, stays in clumps. Leaves can turn more chartreuse in drier conditions.
Easy to grow - use as groundcover, in bigger rock gardens, meadow plantings, along paths, as a cut flower, mass or large-scale plantings, open wood, woodland edges.
This genus honors Leonardo Sesler, an 18th century Venetian botanist and physician who studied European flora. Other scientific name is Sesleria cylindrica.
Blooming Time: June/July - October
Size: 16-20" tall x 12"-14" wide
USDA Zones: 4 to 9
Culture: full sun to part shade, average (medium to medium-dry) soil that is not waterlogged. We haven't trialed this one fully, but we expect it to be fairly drought tolerant!
Moisture Needs: average to drier
Origin: native range includes Morocco, Spain, France, and Italy (RBG Kew)
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: no / yes
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep
Plant Combinations: Easy to grow - use as groundcover, in bigger rock gardens, meadow plantings, along paths, as a cut flower, mass or large-scale plantings, open wood, woodland edges.
Can be combined with majority of common sun perennials and taller grasses - since its structure is neutral or finer, many plants go well this character (with bold or tiny leaves or flowers).
