Architectural biennial with bold rosettes of large fuzzy leaves, upright stems with big white blooms.
Flowers open in morning and close in the afternoon.
Blooms from the bottom up, from late spring to June/July.
Can persist in the garden vie self-seeding, but it's good to collect some seeds to ensure self-seeding (seeds are tiny and need light).
Blooming Time: May, June/July
Size: usually 5'-6' tall. The rosettes get about 1.5-2' wide and often smother smaller plants around (leave some space around)
USDA Zones: 5/6 to 7/8
Culture: full sun, average soils with some drainage. Soils that tend to dry out fast, also leaner or shallow soils, soils with gritty component.
Moisture Needs: medium, medium-dry, dry
Origin: Eurasia
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: no / no (needs some protection)
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: bumblebees, Hover-flies, Halictid bees
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep pot
Plant combinations: Herb garden, flower garden, large rock gardens, deer resistant garden. Goes well with many native and non-native perennials that stay on the average to drier side like Agastache, Amsonia, Allium 'Summer Beauty' and similar summer blooming Alliums, Aster, Baptisia, Coreopsis, Chrysanthemum, bearded Iris, Euphorbia, Eryngium, Echinacea, Gaura, Geranium, Hemerocallis (daylily), Heliopsis, Heuchera, Hypericum, Monarda, Nepeta, Paeonia, Perovskia, Phlomis, Platycodon, Rudbeckia, Salvia nemorosa hybrids, taller Sedum, Solidago, Stachys, Stokesia, Veronica spicata hybrids, and many grasses.
