'Heavy Metal' is upright cultivar of native switch grass, with metallic blue leaves, pinkish flowers in July and August (persist till winter) and yellow fall color (fades to tan-beige).
5' tall x 2' wide clumps, slowly spreading with rhizomes.
Full sun to half shade, adaptable to many soil types (clay, sandy, rocky), medium-dry, medium to (slightly) wet soil (tolerates shorter term flooding). Established plants are drought tolerant.
Too fertile, too wet soils or too shaded spot can cause flopping.
Deer and rabbit resistant grass, black walnut tolerant.
Goes really well with many native perennials or nativars of Aster, Boltonia, Hibiscus, Helianthus, Helenium, Heliopsis, Phlox, Physostegia, Rudbeckia and many others. Well behaved, easy to grow grass. Tolerates salt and can be planted along the driveways or roads, can be used for visual screening or erosion control.
