Product Description
Non-climbing clematis, that still needs upright support to lean against. Hybrid of North American and European species of non-climbing clematis.
Nodding bell-shaped, widely open blue flowers in late spring/early summer, followed by cream thread-like seedheads. New leaves have bronze undersides.
Long-lived perennial that dies back completely to the ground in the fall.
We have been growing this clematis in the root zone of black walnut, in the leaner and drained soil, with morning shade and full afternoon baking sun. In the spot that does dry out in summer.
So we can confirm it is a tough plant with great elasticity and adaptability and is black walnut tolerant.

It meets in bloom with contrasting yellow flowers of later yellow blooming Baptisia hybrids, Coreopsis pubescens, Echinacea paradoxa, late blooming bearded Irises, Paeonia Bartzella hybrids, Thermopsis caroliniana, also with some Kniphofia and most likely with early flowering yellow Hemerocallis. Nice combo is with orange Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Milkweed) - which may start early if it's in a protected spot.
It also meets in bloom with some hardy Geraniums, Echinacea pallida and Echinacea tennesseensis, Penstemons, Salvia nemorosa hybrids, Stachys hybrids and other perennials. But combinations of this Clematis are pretty much endless, medium-sized grasses are also great companions.
