Shorter, ONLY 4' tall seed strain selection (the species grows to 5-6' and can flop on amended soils). Another great introduction from Intrinsic Perennial Gardens.
True monarch magnet, attracts other butterflies, native pollinators and hummingbirds too.
Vertical accent, the upright spikes are very loose-looking because each flower is on a little stem, with narrow leaves that are typical for all blazing stars. Flowers from July to August/early September.
Full sun, average soils, average moisture (medium) to medium-dry. Avoid waterlogged soils.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8.
The species of Liatris ligulistylisis native to central North America from Alberta to New Mexico and east to Manitoba, Wisconsin and Missouri (see the USDA distribution map)
Is occasionally browsed by the deer and the rabbits too.
Other butterfly visitors include the Swallowtail, Sulphur, Hairstreak, Fritillary, Painted Lady and Red Admiral. Hummingbirds feed on the nectar and goldfinches on the seeds.
