Product Description
Woodland perennial with exotic, bigger orchid-like flowers in May.
'Royal Velvet Distinction' is selection from famous Dutch plant lady Eleonore de Koning (nowadays retired).

The species comes from light European deciduous woodlands, but even there it's quite rare.
Half sun (tolerates more sun in cooler regions), dappled shade, light shade. Adaptable to many soil types, including clayish soils, with average to slightly moist soil. Appreciates some leafy organic matter or leafy mulch.
Avoid waterlogged soils.
Patented cultivar, propagation prohibited.
Honey balm doesn't seed often, but seedling may appear sporadically (and can have lighter color of flowers and can be a bit taller).
Hardy in zones 5 to 9.
Deer resistant and pollinator friendly plant (honeybees, potentially some native bees, some butterflies and hummingbirds).
Interesting addition to half shade or shade garden, woodland garden - plant closer to the path, where you can observe the beauty. Goes well with Brunnera, Epimedium, Hosta, Iris cristat, Lilium martagon, Primula, Pulmonaria, Hakonechloa, Carex and North American woodland ephemerals (Mertensia, Sanquinaria, Trillium,..)
